Iris hung up the phone and filled Joey in.

“We better start packing,” he said. “We can check into a hotel near the airport.”

“We?”

“I’m not leaving you behind. The PD is taking Raul into custody, but he’s got guys everywhere.”

“I need to get my passport from my house,” Iris said.

“We’ll go there next.”

Joey ran to the small closet near his bed and pulled out his go bag. He unzipped it and checked the contents. A few bags of pistachios, along with several changes of clothing, toiletry items and his passport. He threw in his leather jacket, then made one final sweep of his bedroom area. His eye fell on the wooden box on his dresser. He went over and took out the envelope that lay at the bottom and slid it into his bag.

“Looks like you’re all set,” said Iris. “Just one problem. We have no car.”

“Oh, shit.” Joey pulled out his cellphone and dialed Twitch.

“I’ll be home in about ten minutes. I don’t think anyone followed me.”

“That’s great,” said Joey. “When you drop off Iris’s car, can you come back and take us to a hotel near LAX?”

“You shitting me! Sammy and I were going to a meeting.”

“Sorry, bro, but I don’t have any wheels right now. And they have AA meetings 24/7 here in OC. You can catch one after.”

“Fine,” Twitch grumbled. “We’ll be there in a half hour or so.”

“I didn’t realize they had AA meetings 24/7 in Orange County,” said Iris when Joey hung up the phone.

“Maybe not 24/7 but pretty close.”

“Do they?” She turned to look at him.

Joey went into the kitchen. “You want a snack while we wait?” He didn’t want to have a conversation about his alcohol problem just yet. He wasn’t the same guy who walked into an AA meeting fifteen months ago after hitting rock bottom and almost offing himself. “You might want to check in with your mom and Jake. Make sure they got settled at the safehouse okay.” Joey pulled out some tortilla strips and a bottle of salsa from the refrigerator. “Use my phone.” He walked over with the chips and salsa in one hand and his phone in the other. When Iris took the phone from his hand without saying a word and dialed her mother, he realized he’d been holding his breath, expecting more questions about AA. Plopping the bag of strips on the table and the jar of salsa, he sat down and took a handful.

As Iris talked to her mother and Jake, Joey snuck glances at her. He noticed how her face softened when she talked to her son. A couple of times, it looked like she was about to cry. When she sang Jake a little nursery rhyme in Spanish, Joey felt choked up himself. Whatever the hell was happening between them, he wasn’t so sure he minded.
